Topsoil forms the upper 3-10 inches of the earth’s surface. An active part of the natural life cycle, that soil is richer in nutrients than the subsoil beneath it. Topsoil forms when large rocks break down and other organic matter gradually adds to the mix. One inch of topsoil will take as much as 100 years to form.
Good quality topsoil contains a rich mix of nutrients necessary for healthy plants. It appears darker than subsoil because of the organic matter it contains. The right type of topsoil retains water as well as nutrients, promoting healthy plant growth. A rich layer of quality topsoil ensures healthy lawns and gardens.
Landscapers add topsoil to projects to give new plants a healthy start. It can be used to improve the quality or quantity of soil in the area being worked. The soil surrounding a new house, for instance, is likely to be sandy or full of clay. Adding several inches of topsoil to the landscape will ensure new plants and seeds get the nutrients they need and new roots can spread.
Garden soil is compost enriched and is a higher quality soil. Garden soil is topsoil enriched with organic leaf matter to make it better suited to actual plant growth. High quality screened topsoil is blended with 100% organic aged leaf mulch, producing a soil that is perfect for sod, seed, gardens, raised beds, and for over-seeding lawn. We use a 50/50 ratio of Screened Topsoil and Composted Leaf Mulch and the Garden Blend is aged an average of 2 years. We also put this soil through a smaller screen 1/2" screen so that it is more fine, less clumpy and easier to work with. This is our most nutrient rich soil.
Fill dirt is earthy material which is used to fill in a depression or hole in the ground or create mounds or otherwise artificially change the grade or elevation of real property. Our fill dirt is clean and compact- able, great for filling in large volume areas such as pools or ditches where the grade needs to be significantly raised. Fill dirt is not conducive to growing grass, so if you plan to seed on top of your new grade you will need to top dress the area with 3-6 inches of topsoil or one of our blends.
*Our blended soils include composted leaf mulch which may contain a small amount of refuse debris.
